AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
2008 Watershed Celebration Day
Over 100 volunteers
attended Watershed Celebration Day
on Nov. 1. The group gathered at
the Clay Center in Charleston to
honor 19 watershed associations and
one individual for their hard work
and commitment in protecting and
restoring streams and educating
their communities about the
importance of watershed protection.
UGWA was honored with the Education
and Outreach Award.

Annual Appliance Collection a
Heavy Metal Hit
October 11-13th, UGWA
staff, partners, and volunteers
contributed their time and muscles
in order to rid the watershed of
rusty junk. With the donated
services of volunteers and the City
of Mullens, interested applicants
could request that their junk be
hauled off. To encourage
everyone's efforts in bringing their
junk to the collection, a lifetime
hunting and fishing license was
raffled and subsequently won by the
fire department's, Bill Cook! This splendid
event resulted in a grand total of
around 30 tons collected and
disposed. Yet to be calculated is
the amount of funds raised to benefit
UGWA's work.
UGWA's 1st Annual
Anything-That-Floats Race and
Guyandotte Celebration!!!
September 30th
This really was an unforgettable
event! Between the race, the
ice cream sundae bar, the
home-cooking, the water education
games and activities for kids, and
the live bluegrass, anyone who came
by the MOC was sure to enjoy
themselves. This was an
excellent opportunity for UGWA
solidify more relationships within
the community and expose people to
the beauty and predicaments of the
Guyandotte River Watershed. Thank
you to everyone who made this event
a success!
Watershed education and stream
ecology reach Wyoming County 4-H
Camp!
June 9--13 For the first time
ever, campers at
4-H camp had the option of taking an
extensive stream ecology and
stewardship class.
Fifteen students spent the week in
classes including: water quality
monitoring, benthic insect
collection, watershed concepts, and
riparian botany. All campers
attending the camp participated in
the Essential Water Class, which
exposed them to watershed issues
through games and activities.
UGWA's Education and Outreach Coordinator,
Emily Carlson, spent the week as a
camp counselor and teacher in this
wonderful opportunity to reach the
youth in the watershed.
UGWA hosts public meeting on
flood study
June 18 The
Upper Guyandotte Watershed Association
hosted a public meeting with the Army
Corps of Engineers' Randy Campbell to
discuss the upcoming flood study of the
watershed and encourage watershed
residents to give the study direction.
Residents and stakeholders engaged in
various conversations about what problems
they wanted to see addressed in the study,
and brought up any questions they had about
how and when the study was to be conducted.
One point of interest was the potential
partnership between Wyoming County and the
West Virginia Conservation Agency in order
to delve into planning a flood excavation
site which would also function as a
community recreation area.

Friends of the Earth
explore and monitor Cabin Creek
June 5
During their last week of
school, 5 members of Friends of the Earth
(FOE) met after class let out to learn
first hand what all this watershed talk is
about: learning basic monitoring techniques,
poking around, and checking out the benthic
insects. UGWA has partnered with
Wyoming East high school in order to get FOE
off the ground and changing the world
around. Check out FOE's website!

UGWA at River Rally, Columbia River
Gorge
May 18--22
River Rally is a
enormous annual gathering of watershed
groups across the nation that come together
to share knowledge and ideas about how to
better protect and manage a watershed.
This was a wonderful opportunity for UGWA to
network and gather ideas to better serve the
Upper Guyandotte Watershed. Both
Kelly Jo Drey-Houck and Greg Taylor attended
the event.

Kiss the Pig
Contest a Hit for UGWA and Dogwood
May 10--12 By hosting a
booth and an alternative fundraiser, UGWA
raised eyebrows and funds during this year's
Dogwood Festival. The rules
of the game were that the contestant with
the most votes kissed the pig on the main
stage of the Dogwood Festival. Each vote
cost one dollar and the idea was not to
actually win, but to support UGWA in their
mission have a good time doing it.
Make it
Shine Spring Clean-Up '07
April 14 Despite
the cold rain,
a group of 15 determined volunteers braved
the weather, and contributed their muscle
power and time to remove trash, muddy tires,
boots, grocery bags, and even an old rusty
dumpster from the Guyandotte River in Itmann.
This year’s Make it Shine Stream Cleanup,
sponsored by the Upper Guyandotte Watershed
Association, ended with hot pizza in a dry
picnic shelter
Many thanks to our volunteers and sponsors
for their hard work and dedication!
