Problems Facing Our Watershed

Our watershed is in serious trouble, with many miles of streams declared unsafe for swimming, fishing, or use as a drinking water source. This widespread contamination contributes to the spread of disease, hinders economic development, harms aquatic life, and decreases the quality of life for area residents. The major causes of these water quality impairments are outlined below.

POOR WASTEWATER TREATMENT
66% of the homes in our watershed lack adequate sewer service. Many residents must rely on failing septic tanks or straight pipes. When this untreated wastewater enters our rivers and streams it can spread dangerous diseases.

SEDIMENTATION
When soil is disturbed, rain can easily wash loose dirt downhill and turn our rivers and creeks muddy. Logging and construction cause excess sedimentation, which degrades the habitat that fish and insects depend on.

ABANDONED MINE DRAINAGE
When rainwater passes over or through old, unreclaimed mine sites, metals such as iron and aluminum get into our rivers and streams. They harm fish and other aquatic life. Pollution of this type can easily destroy your favorite fishing hole.

LITTER
Litter is ugly. It deters economic development by making our community less attractive to tourists and business owners. Proper garbage disposal is the responsibility of every person. Take pride in your community and keep it clean.
