Guyandotte Celebration                                                                                                                          Number of Volunteers needed-- Many                                                                       The Guyandotte Celebration is a one day event that lasts from 12:00pm until around 9:30pm.  Volunteers are asked to donate 2-5 hours of their time.                                      Volunteers Responsibilities-- Staffing the UGWA booth during the Celebration.  Helping with crafts.  Staying at the Anything-that-floats Race check points.  Helping set-up before the event or cleaning up after the event.                                                             Rewards-- Knowledge about the Upper Guyandotte Watershed.  Volunteers will receive a free ticket to the live show that evening.

 TROUT STOCKING
Conducted in partnership with the Upper Guyandotte Chapter Trout Unlimited.  Call Bart at 250-7399 for more information.
Number of Volunteers Needed--Many
Time Commitment— A stocking is a one-day activity that lasts approximately 2 to 4 hours. 4-6 stockings are typically conducted each year.
Location— streams throughout the Upper Guyandotte watershed
Volunteer Responsibilities—Volunteers will be informed on stocking procedures and will physically place the trout in the river. Volunteers should dress for the weather, have some physical agility, and expect to get wet and have fun. Volunteers are also needed to drive their truck or ATV to transport fish tanks and volunteers up and down the stream during the stocking. Volunteers with full-sized pick-up trucks are also needed to travel to the hatchery at Ed Ray to pick up the fish on the morning of the stocking.
Rewards—The satisfaction of restoring trout habitat in this area for all to enjoy. Volunteers will gain knowledge of how trout are stocked, meet new people and enjoy the outdoors. Bring the kids and plan to have a ball!

DATA MANAGER 
Number of Volunteers Needed-- One
Time Commitment--2-3 hours per month for one year                    Location-- The UGWA office at the MOC                                     Volunteer Responsibilities-- Entering field and lab data into the project database; maintaining files of field and lab datasheets; working with the Monitoring Program Coordinator to prepare quarterly and annual reports for the water quality monitoring program.
Rewards-- Data management will offer an opportunity for volunteers who are not physically capable of doing fieldwork to take an active role in the monitoring program.  The volunteer will have the satisfaction of knowing that their work is critical to the identification and planning of future stream cleanup projects.  The volunteer will gain valuable job skills and college students may be able to earn course credit.  Volunteers will have fun and enjoy the company of other community-minded individuals. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the community.


STREAM MONITOR
Number of Volunteers Needed-- Many
Time Commitment— Approximately 5 hours 4 times per year (i.e. one Sunday afternoon in the spring, summer, winter and fall).  A 4--6 hour training session will also be required for new volunteers.
Location—streams throughout the Upper Guyandotte watershed.
Volunteer Responsibilities— Work in teams of 2 or 3 using specialized monitoring equipment to measure and record observations on biological, chemical, and physical stream conditions.  Collect water samples for lab analysis.  Record visual observation of stream conditions.  Volunteers should be dressed appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Moderate physical exertion is required.
Rewards— Volunteers will learn about stream health.  Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are providing data vital to the development of stream cleanup projects.  Volunteers will have fun and meet new people. Volunteers will explore their watershed and enjoy the outdoors.  Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the community.

OFFICE HELP
Number of Volunteers Needed-- 1-2
Time Commitment—8 to 12 hours a month
Location—UGWA office at the MOC
Volunteer Responsibilities—Assist staff with filing, newsletter layout, mailings, proofreading and editing reports and proposals, writing news releases, research, maintaining volunteer and membership database, and any other miscellaneous duties of an office assistant. Ideally, volunteers will be organized, have some computer skills, and possess effective written and oral communication skills.
Rewards—Volunteers will become familiar with UGWA programs. Volunteers will gain marketable job skills in office administration, MS Office programs, and management of a small non-profit. Volunteers will have fun and meet new people. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the community and ensuring the sustainability of a local non-profit organization.

WEBSITE MANAGER
Number of Volunteers Needed—1-2
Time Commitment—5 to 10 hours a month
Location— MOC computer lab, UGWA office, or any computer with internet access
Volunteer Responsibilities—Maintain the UGWA website and update as needed. Volunteer may also use his/her talents to teach other volunteers or staff the necessary skills needed to effectively maintain the site.
Rewards—Volunteers will have fun and meet new people. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the community and ensuring the sustainability of a local non-profit organization. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of teaching other a valuable new skill.

APPLIANCE AND METAL COLLECTION
Number of Volunteers Needed-- 5-10
Time Commitment-- The metal collection is an annual three-day event held on a Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Volunteers are asked to donate 2-5 hours of their time.
Location-- Mullens Opportunity Center
Volunteer Responsibilities-- Set up prior to the start of the collection. Register participants and direct traffic during the collection. Load and haul junk items to the collection site. Volunteers should be dressed appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
Rewards-- Lunch will be provided. Volunteers will participate in a rewarding activity that demonstrates immediate results. Volunteers will have fun and enjoy the company of other community-minded individuals. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the community.

MAKE IT SHINE STREAM CLEANUP
Number of Volunteers Needed-- Many. All watershed residents are encouraged to participate in the stream cleanup.
Time Commitment-- The cleanup is a one-day event that lasts approximately 5 hours.
Location-- On the banks of the Guyandotte River or one of its major tributaries. Cleanup location varies from year to year. Volunteers will meet at the MOC and carpool to the cleanup site.
Volunteer Responsibilities-- Collect and bag trash along the stream bank. Full bags are carried to a central location and piled for pick-up at a later date. Volunteers should be dressed appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Moderate physical exertion is required.
Rewards-- Lunch will be provided. Volunteers will participate in a rewarding activity that demonstrates immediate results. Volunteers will have fun and enjoy the company of other community-minded individuals. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the community. This is also a great opportunity for youth groups or service organizations to log volunteer hours and participate in a community improvement activity.

DOGWOOD FESTIVAL
Number of Volunteers Needed-- 3-5
Time Commitment--The Dogwood Festival is an annual two-day event held on a Friday and Saturday. Volunteers are asked to donate 2-5 hours of their time.
Location-- downtown Mullens
Volunteer Responsibilities-- Set up the tent, table, and display prior to the start of the festival. Staff the UGWA booth during the festival. Distribute brochures and other literature, recruit new UGWA members, solicit responses to a public opinion survey, and answer questions about UGWA and its various projects.
Rewards-- Volunteers will have fun and meet new people. Volunteers will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping the community.

Newsletter Assistant                                                                                                                                  Number of Volunteers Needed--2                                                                             Time Commitment--4 hours once every three months  (Feburary, May, August, and November)                                                                                                  Location-- The Mullens Opportunity Center                                                   Volunteer Responsibilities--Address, stuff, stamp, and seal the quarterly newsletter    Rewards--  Volunteers will get to preview the quarterly newsletter right off of the press.  They will have the benefit of knowing they helped supply UGWA's members and the surrounding area with the latest information.
